The human pays homage to the ancient gods of the elements.
Earth Water Wind and Fire was composed in 1992 for the revival of ‘Féile Bealtine’ (from the Irish meaning ‘Festival of Fire’) – the May Day Festival in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland, commissioned by the Derry City Council and performed in the City Guildhall. It was first recorded by the Belfast Harp Orchestra in 1994 on the album ‘Carillon’ (IHCP label) and is also on the American best-seller ‘Celtic Harpestry’ (Universal Label) and the German: ‘Best of the Belfast Harp Orchestra’ (Laika Records).
The themes of Earth Water Wind and Fire represent the ancient Celtic gods of the elements celebrated individually on the ‘season festivals’. The ‘heart-beat’ theme represents man whose existence is animated and conditioned by them.
These are the scores of the professional Irish Harp Orchestra (1999-), the student Irish Youth Harp Orchestra (2004 – 2016) and the Belfast Harp Orchestra (1992-2002) – harp ensembles with up to 24 players of mixed standards performing in up to 8 parts. As well as bringing the Irish harp to a world audience, the orchestras served to give performing experience to aspiring concert artists and employment to professionals in world touring large-scale stage productions.
Composed by Janet Harbison.
