This book is a manual for the Adult Preliminary Course in the Irish Harp Collleg oral training system.

For adult players, this course presents a range of material in sequence of difficulty and establishes a great foundation in harp playing for grown-ups with a wide interest in harp music in general.  Starting from Pachelbel’s Canon, the music includes American folk songs, popular hymns, and of course, lots of favourite Irish songs, Carolan tunes and great Irish harp music.

It is a supporting volume for live lessons with a teacher.  This oral method of instruction is a structured approach to learning the Irish harp for students who do not come from the immersion environment of Irish traditional music.  IT will teach you to be creative and to ‘participate’ in the ‘language of music’; as in taking part confidently and competently the ‘session’ (social music-making with all instruments) and preparing you for formal solo performance (stage play).

This is an introductory course for adult or junior beginners entering the 4 level course designed to take the average 12 year old student to a significant level of competency at Level 4 by the age of 16 years.  Older and younger beginners require a further level of introduction to the course which allows them a more comfortable progress through the levels when they are ready.

Along with arrangement, accompaniment and improvisation training, this tutor includes the tunes:

The Chord of C Song, Freres Jacques / Brother Jack / Bráther Séamus, various from The Book of Chimes, The A-B-C Song, Row, Row, Row your Boat, The Big Ship Sails, Óró Sé Do Bheatha ‘Bhaile, The Drunken Sailor, My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, My Darling Clementine, Brian Boru’s March, The Thumb Parade, Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms, The Mountains of Mourne, Little Brigid Flynn, Joyful Joyful (Ode to Joy), Joy to the World, Miss Goulding, Lady Gethin, The Harp That Once Through Tara’s Halls, Oh Breath Not His Name, A Lovely Lass To a Friar Came, My Lady Greensleeves, Seothín Seó (Brahms Lullaby), Raglan Road / The Dawning of the Day, Mickey Seán’s Slide, The Rakes of Mallow
