The essential theme of this piece is simplicity itself.

Stepping from the 1st to the 5th notes of the scale (from ‘do’ to ‘so’ ) the melody reflects on life moving from birth to maturity.  Suddenly, it is broken with the drop to the flattened 7th resolving to the 5th below.  This reflects a life curtailed but nevertheless complete in its flow and beauty.  The piece was composed to comfort Janet’s brother and family on the death of their first child, baby Daniel.”
