Tribute to O'Neill Solo
for Harp at Level 3
Tribute to O'Neill was composed in 1985 for the Festival International de l'Harpe Celtique at Dinan, Brittany.
It was dedicated to the present Lord O'Neill of Shane's Castle in County Antrim, Northern Ireland who was the harper's patron for some years in the early 1980's. The piece was featured as the title track on the harpers first solo CD production and is popularly played by all kinds of harp players ever since.
The tribute was structurally modelled on old Irish marches which are presented in jig time with variation in each repetition. Particular in this piece is the use of harmonics at the quarter string as well as at the half string - a modern composition with many unique aspects of technique built on a strong traditional bass and modality.
