The Last Rose of Summer is one of Thomas Moore’s best-loved songs from his ‘Irish Melodies’ collection published in a series of booklets between 1808 and 1834.
He was the ‘Irish Byron’ and although a catholic, mixed easily among the establishment ladies of Dublin in his time amassing a fortune with the publication of his poetry and songs – many of which were set to the music of the 18th century harpers collected by Edward Bunting at the Belfast Harpers’ Assembly of 1792.
In China, along with the song ‘Danny Boy’, every child learns this song in school and is one of Ireland’s best known love-songs the world over.
